The fourth meeting of the Virtual Whisky tasting group took place on Friday April 24th at 9pm ET. The focus was on whiskies from the Islands region of Scotland. With many hundreds of islands, the range of whiskies ranges from light to peaty, and all varieties in between. As many islands are uninhabited, there are a few distilleries which contribute much of the malt whisky trade.
About the Islands Region
Let’s start with the obvious point – even though Islay is an island, it is excluded from the Islands region, because it is classed as its own separate, distinct region. That means that even though Scotland is surrounded by hundreds of islands, only a few have distilleries – those include Arran, Jura, Orkney, Skye and Mull.
Orkney is famous for Highland Park, Skye is famous for Talisker, Arran and Jura for their eponymous malts, and Mull for Tobermory.
It will be interesting to see whether the members of our group bring along something sweet and peaty, something malty, or a dram with a good smack of pepper…
